BIOGRAPHY
Born in the town of Talstrup, just outside Copenhagen, right back Mette Vestergaard did not have to travel far to have a successful career, which she spent entirely in and around the Danish capital.
After coming through the ranks at Rødovre HK, she moved to FIF in 1994 and stayed there until 2006, in which time the club had become FCK. Second place in the Danish league in 2000 was the closest she came to winning a major honour, in an era dominated by Viborg and Slagelse. She retired from professional handball in 2006, joining amateur club Lyngby.
At international level, her story was very different. After making her debut for the senior side in 1995 as a 19-year-old, she became a stalwart in the side for the next decade, winning over 180 caps and scoring more than 500 goals. Twice a European champion, she was part of the team that won back-to-back Olympic gold medals in Sydney and Athens, respectively.
While playing as an amateur, Vestergaard became a youth coach, and in 2015 became part of the coaching staff for the Danish women.
